Dragon's Dogma (ドラゴンズ ドグマ Doragonzu Doguma) is an action, adventure, role-playing game coming for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in Early 2012 for Japan and May 22, 2012 for North America. It is being published and developed by Capcom, the team behind games such as Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry 4. It is under the directoral leadership of Hideaki Itsuno and leading the production is Hiroyuki Kobayashi. Initial news of the game states that every action in the game will influence the way it is played.



Within the game players will be given the opportunity to customize their own characters, being able to alter gender and appearance. After the initial customization is complete the player must then choose one of three classes for their character:

  • The Fighter - A class enhanced in attacking. They use swords and shields as primary weapons of choice.
  • The Mage - A class that focuses on the magic. Staves, Staffs and other similar objects are used as their weapon of choice.
  • The Strider - A class that focuses on speed. They use Daggers for close combat and Bows for long ranged combat.

Players will be given AI teammates called Pawns, who can be utilised by selecting commands such as 'Come', 'Go' and 'Help'. They are otherworldly and immortal assistants that will help the player by giving them information on enemies, other characters, as well as other hints and tips as well as aiding the player in combat.

The game will also allow the players to grab onto their enemies giving way for a new type of gameplay and more varied way of attacking enemies. An example of this is holding on to the legs of a Griffon, climbing onto it's body, and dealing more damage. Hideaki Itsuno has said that "In a lot of action games, with big enemies the tendency is just to have you hacking away at the shins. You don't get the full effect of fighting a giant boss, with this game you can climb all over it. If it has a body part, you can attack it.". This ability draws inspiration from the Playstation 2 game Shadow of the Colossus.

The game boasts an expansive world with a plethora of enemies to encounter as well as expansive city environment, over 200 NPCs who will move freely about their day to day lives as well as each one having their own individual voice acting.

The game has been designed with player ability in mind so that even those inexperienced in the genre(s) can play the game to their level. This is done via the Pawn system in that the weaker players to the game can use stronger allies to do the majority of the battling for them, where as more experienced players can recruit pawns for a more stategic battle.

The game is said to last for up to 30 - 100 hours varying on the extensivity the players play the game for.


During a raid on the small fishing village of Casadeis, a Dragon approaches the protagonist of the story and reveals to them that they are "The Chosen One" and then rips out their heart. No longer able to remain alive without his/her heart the death of the hero is inevitable. However through a miracle The Chosen One lives and inherits the title of The Arisen. He/she is now destined to hunt down and kill the Dragon that stole their heart.


In August 2010, Capcom registered the Trademarks for Dragon's Dogma and Asura's Rage in Europe in which the former was later officially announced in April 2011 at the Captivate Event hosted by Capcom. At the event director Hideaki Itsuno noted that this was a game he had wanted to create since he was a child in school and that now the technology was advanced enough and with a team of 150 at his disposal, his childhood dream could be realised.
